Hello, Bonjour, Hola, Hallo, Ciao, Namaste and let me welcome you back after a long summer of possible sun, sea, sand, festivals and parties! Or, if you’ve been in Britain, rain.

Let me start off by introducing myself! My name is Mark Smith and I am your Vice President of Recreation, so I send out a massive THANK YOU to you all who voted for me. This role was formally filled by Elliott Hall who has now finished his two year sabbatical term and is returning as a student to UWL. As I know he is going to read this, I’d would like to thank him so much for filling this role while I was a student here.

But as they say, it's time to turn the page and start a new chapter, and this year is a different year to others, as for the first time in ages, we have a completely new team of sabbaticals that are myself, Jodie Vickery and Rohit Marria.

So, for the freshers reading this, this really is a marking point in your life. The University years have finally started for you, so it’s time to make the most of it and get involved with your Students’ Union and the events it has on offer.

For those who are returning, this is a new start and a new era to what you have seen in the Students Union, so it’s time for you guys to get even more involved!

But what, I hear you ask, is the task of the VP of Recreation?

Basically, I deal with all sports, societies and entertainment. I’ve been spending the whole summer planning your Freshers’ Ball and Freshers’ Week (which I hope you will all attend!), and liaising with our sports teams and societies. But! Just because I am tucked away in an office doesn’t mean you can’t drop in to say hello. My office door is always open to you with regards to questions that deal with Freshers’, putting your own events on, entertainment, sports and societies.

If I’m not around, then please feel free to speak to our lovely Calley Wilson, our Sports and Societies Coordinator, who will be more than happy to help you with any queries that you may have.

As I’m sure you’ve heard, these years you have here will go past in a flash, but your time here will make you -  you will meet new people, try new things and go through some pretty big changes. Hopefully I can give you the entertaining experiences along the journey, but this can only happen if you get involved with your Students’ Union, so, while you are here, remember:

•    Work hard
•    Party harder
•    Get involved

I’ll look forward to seeing you around the University as well as the Students’ Union.
